Art and Design

Our Vision for Art

‘A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design’ (National Curriculum).

We strive for every child to develop an appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts.  Through art and design, we aspire to stimulate imagination and creativity, providing experiences that will enable children to express themselves freely, creatively and confidently.

Through our art and design curriculum, children use a range of visual, tactile and sensory experiences, allowing them to communicate what they see, think and feel by using the elements of colour, texture, form and pattern. Lessons in art and design promote careful observation and develop an appreciation of the world around us.

We strive for every child to explore and investigate, taking inspiration from the works of great artists, craft makers, architects and designers from a range of cultures and expertise, both past and present.  To fully experience ‘Life in all Fullness’, art and design is taught as a learning journey, developing and nurturing the artist within every child.

We believe that displaying children’s work is integral to affirming and acknowledging the creative processes they have experienced, evidenced in their sketch books throughout their learning journey. We strive to celebrate and represent the work of every child and we hope you enjoy our featured work samples.

Life in all Fullness through Art

We believe that learning through and about the arts enriches children’s lives and learning, providing opportunities for them to experiment, invent and create, and flourish as individuals.

Research shows that art and design:

  • encourages self-expression and creativity
  • builds confidence and a sense of individual identity
  • improves well-being and happiness
  • develops critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around us

Our Aims in Art

As stated in the national curriculum for art and design, we aim for all our children to:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms

Skills and Values

We strive to embed our values in all areas of school life, promoting them as a guide for flourishing in life and learning.

As artists and designers, we:

Are TRUE to ourselves when we experiment, invent and create our own work.

Show RESPECT for different kinds of art, craft and design, including historical, contemporary and cultural art forms.

Use our sketch books to CELEBRATE our personal achievements and the work of great artists, craft makers, architects and designers.

Take RESPONSIBILITY to develop our techniques in drawing, painting and sculpture, and in looking after our materials.

SERVE our school and local community by sharing and displaying our high-quality creations, bringing enjoyment to others.

Work in COLLABORATION to review and revisit our ideas, encouraging each other to use the language of art, craft and design.
