Year 5

Each of our classes are named after an inspirational British person who represents and demonstrates our vision: ‘learning and living life in all its fullness’.

5N is named after Sir Isaac Newton, who was born in 1643.  His father was a farmer who died before Isaac was born. Isaac was raised by his grandmother.  After graduating from Cambridge University, Isaac returned to his family’s farm, where he continued to study and lead his own experiments. His first great discovery came from his experiments with light.  Newton also wanted to know what keeps the Moon in its orbit, or path, around Earth.  His work showed how gravity controls the motion of the planets around the sun as well as the motion of the Moon.  As he studied gravity and motion, Newton also made important contributions to mathematics.  In 1705 the Queen of England made him a knight.

5T is named after Alan Turing, who was born in 1912. He made major contributions to the fields of mathematics, computer science, and artificial intelligence. He worked for the British government during World War II, when he succeeded in breaking the secret code Germany used to communicate.  In 1946, he produced a design for the first electronic computer – the Automatic Computing Engine (ACE). Every year, beginning in 1966, a person who has made a great contribution to the field of computer science is awarded the Turing Award.  In 2019 the Bank of England announced that Turing would be featured on the new £50 banknote.

5N is taught by Wilkinson and 5T is taught by Miss Pople

Year 5 Recommended Reading

Our school library features further information about our book recommendations and Mrs Tompkins, our school librarian, looks forward to meeting you once a week for your class library slot.  Throughout the year, Mrs Tompkins leads fun reading challenges.  This year, we're invited to 'read around the world'.  We encourage you to read at home as much as you can.  A reading diary will travel between home and school to document your reading adventures.

Year 5 - Autumn Term

Autumn 1

This half term, we will be investigating: what makes someone an Earth Hero?  As part of our project, we will explore the actions of various individuals and their impact on the global community.  In guided reading, we will read the book ‘Earth Heroes’ by Lily Dyu and produce a biography, detailing an individual’s influence on the global environment.  We will also explore a chosen earth hero through our art work.

Autumn 2

This half term, we will be pondering: is it right to explore a place where no human has ever been?  At the launch of this project, we will have two amazing experiences related to our space learning: VR headsets and a space escape room. Will we escape in time for Christmas?!  Inspired by the book 'Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover', we will research, design and create our own Mars Rover.

Year 5 - Spring Term

Spring 1

This half term, we will investigate physical and human features in and around Farnborough, as we discover: what makes our local area unique?  Inspired by the book 'Wonder' by RJ Palacio, we will also investigate what makes a person unique.  As part of this project, we will visit Neasden Temple, as part of our RE learning about Hinduism.

Spring 2

This half term, we will be reflecting on a history linked question: 'Why was the Battle of Britain a turning point in British history?'  In English, we will read the book When the Sky Falls, by Phil Earle.

Year 5 - Summer Term

Summer 1

This half term, we will be considering: what is the impact of water?  Through a range of practical activities, we will learn about and investigate different parts of a river.  During this project, we will discover the importance of a river to a community, while reflecting on Global Goal 6, Clean Water and Sanitation.  At the end of our project, we will lead a water-based fundraising event in support of Water Aid.

Summer 2

This half term, we will learn about the lives of the Ancient Egyptians, while answering the question: 'Is it right for archaeologists to remove artefacts from Eygpt?'

Our project launches with a 'play in a day' experience, led by the Treehouse Theatre company, immersing us into the history of Ancient Egypt.   In art, we will create Egyptian Canopic Jars in clay.
