Governors

Governor Roles and Responsibilities

Governors are the strategic leaders within schools and have the responsibility of promoting high standards of educational achievement, ensuring every child in their school receives the best quality education. The DfE Governance Handbook states the governing body has three core functions;

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

Governors are appointed by different groups.  A Foundation Governor can be appointed by the local church (through the Parochial Church Council ‘the PCC’), the Diocesan Board of Education and in some Church schools directly by the Diocesan Bishop or their representative.

Foundation Governors have the additional responsibility to secure the character of the school as a Church of England voluntary school, that it is preserved and developed in accordance with the school’s trust deed and its ethos statement.

The Full Governing Body meets twice a term, and delegates some of its responsibilities to three committees:

  • PPP (Personnel, Pay and Pastoral)
  • RS&C (Raising Standards & Curriculum)
  • Resources

Governor's Strategic Vision

Our Vision and Strategic Objectives for the School

  • We will be an inclusive Church school where we celebrate and welcome children and families of the Christian faith, other faiths and none.
  • We will be a beacon in the centre of the community delivering high-quality pastoral care for our staff, children and families in a positive, nurturing and caring environment.
  • We will be a centre of excellence, collaborating with other schools and organisations for the mutual benefit of our school and community.
  • We want every child to be able to do ordinary things in extraordinary ways – living life in all its fullness

Governor Impact

  • 'Governors have a good understanding of the strengths and areas to develop across the school and a clear understanding of their role' (Hampshire Advisor and Inspector, 2024).
  • 'Leaders and governors have worked tirelessly to improve the school. They have fully established a positive culture whereby all staff feel recognised and valued' (Ofsted Inspection Report, 2022).
