Our Vision and Values for Assessment
Underpinned by our school values and rooted in EEF (Education Endowment Foundation) guides to best practice, our teaching and learning principles are inspired by our church school vision of ‘Learning and Living Life in all its Fullness’ for all members of our community. Supported by our vision and linked to our Christian foundations as a school, we aim for all at our school to flourish in, and enjoy, life and learning.
Above all, we strive to deliver ‘learning that lasts’ - rooted in an ambitious curriculum that is coherently planned and sequenced, further supported by the effective use of assessment.
As teachers and leaders, we strive to use assessment well. For example, to help pupils embed and use knowledge fluently, or to check understanding and inform teaching.
How we assess learning at St Peter's
Our assessment strategy for the core areas of the curriculum works on a principle of splitting the end-of-year expectations laid down by the 2014 National Curriculum into categories- based on whether a child is working towards these expectations, or has reached them (the 'expected' standard for each age group) and has a mastery of all the skills they have learnt, in different contexts.
Children who are above the expected level then work to add greater depth and breadth to their learning. The system is not designed to be a race to reach the next levels as fast as possible, but to provide opportunities to embed and explore knowledge, skills and understanding of each area taught.
We are fully aware that every child is different, and that all work at different rates. Children who are not yet considered to be working towards the expectations of their own year group are carefully monitored and supported to help them make as much progress as they are able to, with the aim of catching up over time.
